Wall Paint Color: SW 6109 Hopsack
As for cost, wood would have been cheaper without a doubt. The straight lengths of gutter were only $5 for a 10 foot length. Since each shelf was 36" per side x 2 sides x 4 shelves, we needed three 10 foot sections of gutter. That was the cheap part. Each end cap was $3 and we needed 8, and each corner piece was $6 and we needed 4. Our total was $60 using a 10% off coupon. We didn't need to paint though! Bill just used a hacksaw at home to make our cuts and we screwed them into the studs and at the end of each shelf. They are safe and secure (and cute and practical!).
And in case you're interested, we first taped the proposed location of the shelves on the wall so we could get a feel for the length and spacing of the shelves. We ended up spacing the shelves 14 inches apart from the top of one shelf to the top of the next shelf.
Has anyone else jumped on the gutter bookshelf bandwagon?
Have a super weekend!

4/23/2012 Update: Here are some images of the drywall screws that we used to attach the bookshelves. We used 1.5" drywall screws placed at a slight angle into studs in the corner of the shelves and in the middle of each shelf. We also put one screw into each end piece (not in the stud) when Command Hooks failed to hold the shelves flat to the wall on the end. We didn't use any anchors or special screws. We just drilled in just under the top lip of the gutter. Please comment or email with any additional questions. I'm happy to help!!
End cap screw into drywall. You could use an anchor here, but we didn't.
Center screw into stud.
Corner screws. One on each wall through the stud.
11/30/12 Update: WALL PAINT COLOR INFORMATION: Sherwin Williams 6109 Hopsack. I finally found the paint can that corresponds to this room!! (The wall color was inherited from our home's previous owners.)
Did you make a ladder for charm to reach the top shelf?
ReplyDeleteKiki, didn't I tell you? Charm is taking after his favorite superhero, Buzz Lightyear, and he's learning to fly. Top shelf? Not a problem.
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, simple book rotation will solve the top shelf issue. And when he lets me choose his night time books, I don't have to bend over:)!
This is such a sweet idea! I would have loved a personal library when I was little. (Heck, I'd love one now!)
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! I'm going to try and convince my sister to do this in her play room! I'm your newest follower.. please come check out my blog if you have time!
ReplyDeleteBringingbeauty.blogspot.com
This is such a great idea! Now I just have to find the right place to put it!
ReplyDeleteJo-Anna
Found this on pinterest...Awesome idea. My brother has a rain gutter cutting machine, Yay me!! I'll bet these would look awesome with copper gutters for a grown up space.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea with the shelves... But I have to ask, where did you get your toddler bed? I am in the toddler bed market and that is the exact look of a bed that I want!
ReplyDeletePaige
Looks like the ones they have a Ikea.
DeleteIKEA has some great options too! My husband and father in law made this bed for my kiddos:).
Deletewhat an adorable idea!!! great for a playroom too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the positive feedback and pins! I wish it was my original idea, but I think I found it on pinterest:)!
ReplyDeleteNate and Paige-My husband and father-in-law built the toddler bed using a single piece of marine grade plywood that we painted white. My father-in-law had built a toddler bed for my husband way back in the day using the same exact plan, so it was a father-son bonding adventure to build a replica for my son:)
In the pictures above, it looks like there is a big headboard, but that was just a blank art canvas I stuck behind the bed as I played with ideas for a taller headboard.
Hope that helps!
I love this reading corner! My son isn't old enough for a room like this one (he's only 7 months), but soon enough he will be and it will include a reading corner like this one. Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteDo you have any tips on "non-corner" shelves? Also, did you make a lot of giant holes to do this?
ReplyDeleteWe have 3 rain gutter shelves in our playroom but I am really loving the way you used them in the corner .... thinking I'm going to move mine around now :) What a great job, love the wall color too
ReplyDeleteCan I ask where you got the super why doll? My daughter would love it!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love the book shelf! I'm talking my husband into it right now! :)
ReplyDeleteAmanda--For non-corner shelves, if you are going to span a large distance, you'll probably want to pick up a few gutter support brackets (they have them in the gutter section at Lowe's)for increased stability. We didn't need them because our sections are only 3 feet long from end to corner. As far as number of screws, all 4 shelves were hung using 24 screws total (Three per shelf side= 1 in the corner in a stud, 1 in the middle through a stud, and 1 in the end at an angle (non-stud)).
ReplyDeleteHope that helps!
Caitlyn--Super Why is from Toys R Us. I bought him a while back on clearance though:(. He is plush and talks/sings. My son loves him!
Just searching for little library ideas for my daughters room. Her younger brother is a climber as well, so the wooden shelves were out. I didn't want a bookcase, I wanted stand alone shelves, I love this idea! I'm also going to put it in the corner, but never thought to wrap it around the corner like you did. I love it, I'm going to do this one!! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove the corner ones. We advocate gutter style book shelves because kids will be much more interested in reading books when they can see the entire cover than just the spine. You just need more of our books on your shelves! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat color is on your wall
ReplyDeleteWhat color is on your wall
ReplyDeleteI found this last night and made them today! They are assembled and waiting to be hung. This is EXACTLY what I have been looking for to put in the playroom! We painted ours yellow, I can't wait to get them hung- hopefully tonight! Thanks for the fantastic idea!
ReplyDeleteJenni Presmyk
Smith Family-The wall color in Charm's room was there when we moved in. I did some paint can searching, and my best guess is that it's Sherwin Williams 6110 Steady Brown. Happy Painting to you!
ReplyDeleteJenni-I'm in awe of you!! Talk about getting 'er done fast! If you have a chance, send me some pictures of your shelves. I'd love to see them in yellow! sunshineontheinside@yahoo.com
UPDATE: I found the REAL wall color. It's Sherwin Williams 6109 Hopsack!

ReplyDeleteWhere can I buy these shelves?
ReplyDeletesarahrjoseph--The shelves were made from vinyl gutters that we purchased at Lowe's and cut to size with a hacksaw. We used clear caulk to attach the end caps to each vinyl shelf, and corner gutter pieces for the corner of the room. Easy peasy. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!!
ReplyDeleteThese are great! I want to put a reading corner in the nursery, but the room is too small to put in a book shelf. Can't wait to start this project!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration!
Kate
BTW, if you get a minute, I would love it if you checked out my new blog. http://crafty-kate.blogspot.com
Thanks Kate! I'd love to see your finished product! I'm going off to check out your blog now too!
Deletei love this, i love this! especially that it goes around the corner, what a perfect little nook.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI absolutely LOVE this corner bookshelf!! I am talking my husband into making these as I type! One question ~ did you just screw the corner gutter piece right into the corner of the wall and the gutter slides into it? Trying to conceptualize how this all works/fits together. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteMeg...Great question! I don't think I ever specified how we did this in my post. My husband actually used clear silicone caulk to adhere the straight gutter pieces to the corner pieces and the end caps as well. He did this before we hung the shelves onto the wall. When we went to hang the shelves, we had 4 pre-made 'L' shaped shelves that we just had to screw into the wall. I believe I mentioned in an earlier comment that we used 24 screws total for the project, 3 per side of each L shaped shelf. (1 screw in the corner of the stud, 1 screw in the middle through a stud and one into the drywall on the end). There ended up being 2 screws in each corner piece in close proximity (1 on each side of the wall).
ReplyDeleteGood luck and comment again if you have any other questions!
Thank you so much! We have all the supplies...going to get working on them tonight :-) I'm so excited!!
DeleteAwesome! I hope they turned out well!!!
DeleteWhat a fabulous idea!! I'm following you from TDC-stop by for a visit!
ReplyDeleteI just found this on pinterest. Do you think they would hold cookbooks? I need to open up some cupboard space, so I was thinking this would be good for cookbooks.
ReplyDeleteI don't see why not:). Just make sure you have proper cross support if you are spanning long distances (you can use plastic gutter brackets that are located right by the other gutter pieces at Lowe's). Also, you might want to keep the really heavy cookbooks off the shelf. Kid's books are pretty light for the most part, and that's all we've tested our shelves with. I don't know if the shelves would bend with a super heavy load over an extended period of time. A wood shelf like this: http://ana-white.com/2010/10/plans/ten-dollar-ledges might better fit your needs. Good luck!
DeleteI had these in my old classroom!!! Second graders loved the way they could see all the book covers at once!
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for a bookshelf for my son's room forever! This is perfect! My husband put a similar configuration together today and it looks great. Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteYeah for gutter bookshelves:)! Glad they worked out for you too!
DeleteFound you on Pinterest and have decided these are my next project! Thanks for the idea! I have signed up on your blog.
ReplyDeleteSuper!! Let me know how they turn out!
DeleteHi, i've been tempted to do this but what's held me back is the cutting of the shelves. We do not have a hack saw:( Do you know if Lowes or HOme Depot has a cutting service for Gutters like they do for wood?
DeleteMisty
Hi Misty,
DeleteI don't believe they cut them in store, but it never hurts to ask!! And if they don't...check out the link to this standard hacksaw, which is less than $6!!: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100351892/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=hack+saw&storeId=10051
Good luck with your project!
I am so excited! I am doing this TODAY!!!!! Just got the stuff, but wish I had the 10% off coupon to purchase. LOL. But, paint free?! SOLD!
ReplyDeleteYeah Crystal! I hope it went well!! Thanks for taking the time to comment:)!
DeleteI've read through to make sure I'm not asking a duplicate question and I think I'm ok. (I'm also about to hang some gutter shelves. Yay!) So just to be clear, y'all just used regular screws in the back of the gutter? Not huge gutter screws or brackets? My shelves are only 32 inches across, so they won't be super heavy. I'm assuming your end caps are what support the front from bending forward?
ReplyDeleteThanks in advance for you help,
Sarah
also , once I'm done, do you mind if I share a link to your website in my blog?
DeleteHi Sarah,
DeleteI just added some updated images to this entry that show the drywall screws that we used to attach the gutters to the wall. They were 1.5" long (what we had on hand) and we drilled them in at a slight angle. We didn't use anchors or brackets or anything. I'd just recommend hitting the studs in a couple locations if possible. The end caps definitely provide stability. Also, we're good about keeping the books angled towards the wall, rather than angled into the room. (Does that make sense? Hopefully.:)) In almost 6 months we've had no problems with any of the shelves bending forward.
And please feel free to link back in your blog!
Good luck!
Beth
Makes total sense and seems way easier. Thanks, I'll be working on it while the baby naps tomorrow. :)
DeleteLove this idea. I was wondering what is the line with clothes pins hanging above?
ReplyDeleteThanks! The line is just twine held up with 3M Command hooks, and then I added alphabet flash cards using wooden clothespins. Here's a link if you are interested: http://sunshineontheinside.blogspot.com/2011/07/abc-wall-art.html
DeleteThanks for sharing this awesome idea! I have a little bookworm that is going to be in heaven with this!!
ReplyDeleteYeah for bookworms!! Have fun:)!
DeleteHi! I love your information and am in the process but am having trouble. My plastic gutters are the same on he front side as they are in the back. I drilled my holes at the top and in the corners but it droops forwards. Did I get the wrong kind of gutters or do they only make one kind? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThe back side (the side you attach to the wall) should be flat against the wall. I'm not sure about the different gutter styles, but it sounds like you might have picked up a 'u' shaped gutter of some sort. Perhaps print off a picture of a side view of the gutter shelves from above and bring it in to your local store, so they can lead you to a flat backed gutter. Good luck, and feel free to comment or email with any additional questions!
DeleteI found this on Pinterest and I love it! I am actually going to use the idea to store my ever-expanding ribbon collection! I currently have a bookshelf filled with tension rods to store it, but it's getting to be quite a problem to reach the middle spools. This idea is great for adding and removing ribbon easily! Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love that you have an alternative use for the shelves! Happy ribbon organizing to you:)!
DeleteI wonder if this can be done in reverse. How do I explain what I mean?? hmm...not the inside corner of a room, but the corner you can peek around. haha. That's all I have the space for and I think it would look awesome if I could figure that out. :D
ReplyDeleteHi Ana,
DeleteI bet that would work. You'd just have to use a different corner joint that would for the 'peek around' corner:)!
Good luck!
I love the paint color on the walls! May I ask the name of the color & where you bought it? Thanks so much! I love the book shelves too! They look great!
ReplyDeleteSorry just saw your previous reply to the paint color question! Thanks!
DeleteConverting rain gutters into bookshelves is a truly creative and resourceful idea! It’s a good thing that you capped the edges of the gutter. That is the best way to keep Charm from getting hurt by the sharp edges. I also love that you chose white; it’s so simple but it blends perfectly with your home’s interiors.
ReplyDeleteWe have the same curtains in ds room. Love them.
ReplyDeleteGoing to do this in my boys' room...fabulous idea! Thank you for sharing. Smiles~Beth
ReplyDeleteThanks Beth!
DeleteThis is a awesome idea.. Going to use this idea in my sewing room. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteGreat! I hope it is working out well for you!!
DeletePlan to make this for the kitchen for my cook books- this way I have a book case and some place to put the open book(out of harms way)while I'm cooking.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!! Happy cooking to you!
DeleteWas looking for a book sheleves design recently and found this. Love it. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou're quite welcome! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteWas looking for a book sheleves design recently and found this. Love it. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI did this in my pantry for spices and in my craft room for paints and small jars of findins .I did however use the metal ones so I could spraypaint them the color I wanted..I have had them for about two years and they still hold perfect.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to hear how durable they are! Our shelves are holding strong as well:)!
DeleteI loved this idea! Thank you! We moved into a new home just weeks after I first saw this so it went on the hubbie's to-do list. It's now completed! We actually went from corner to corner on 1 wall to keep from having to buy endcaps or the corner pieces (going cheaper since we have a Pastor's salary). But my kid's love it! I love it! And my kid's are reading more because they see the book.
ReplyDeleteThere is something about seeing the book covers that makes it so much more fun to pick out a book:)! Glad these worked out so well for you and your family!
DeleteI'm doing this now for my daughters room! so excited!
ReplyDeleteI got the gutters (2 ten foot pieces for smaller shelves) and got the eight end caps(2 for $7) and instead of buying the corner pieces we're cutting the inside pieces at 45 degree angles to fit bc that saves us over $30 dollars. Just gorilla glue it to each other
ReplyDeleteFantastic idea! I've never used Gorilla Glue before. I'll have to check it out!:) Happy reading!
DeleteThanks for the awesome tutorial. I pinned this months ago and husband & I put these up in our sons nursery this week! I just posted his finished nursery on my blog:

Congrats on your little one! I'm off to check out your post now:)!
DeleteThank you so much for this awesome idea and easy to follow instructions!!! My husband and I built them this weekend for our daughter. Here's some pics of the finished product: http://tinyurl.com/9u54qbx and http://tinyurl.com/98bsbms
ReplyDeleteThey look awesome!! I love the pink wall strips too. Thanks for taking the time to share:)!
DeleteThat's creativity at its finest! A book shelf made of gutters is an eco-saver, and at the same time, you can do it all by yourself. All you need to be concerned with is how to make it child-proof inside your home. You got it, Beth! :)
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Becky

ReplyDeleteI love it, in fact i only really love corner gutter shelves! Sadly in Canada it's about 14-15 per corner piece, which is so silly. Perhaps on a cross border trip we'll have to get a few. It'd be $60 just for the corner pieces.
